When Is the Right Time to Change Engine Oil?

Engine oil is the "blood" of your car. Changing it late causes engine parts to wear out faster and makes repairs far more expensive.

General guidelines

• Mineral oil: every 5,000 km
• Semi synthetic: every 7,500 km
• Full synthetic: every 10,000 km

If the car is rarely driven, go by time instead: change the oil at least every 6 months, since oil oxidizes even when the car sits still.

Signs your oil needs changing

1. Oil looks pitch black and thin on the dipstick
2. The engine sounds rougher than usual
3. Acceleration feels heavy
4. The oil warning light comes on

Don't forget the oil filter

Replace the oil filter at every oil change. A dirty filter contaminates fresh oil with old residue.
